Afghan journalist Kobra Hassani sentenced to two years in prison

A court in Saint Petersburg has sentenced Afghan journalist Kobra Hassani to two years in prison on charges of illegally crossing the Russian border.

News Center- Kobra Hassani, an Afghan journalist and activist, has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court in Saint Petersburg on charges of “illegally crossing the Russian border” to go to Europe.

TASS Russian News Agency reported on Tuesday that the journalist had already served her prison sentence in pre-trial detention and she could face deportation to Afghanistan.

According to the local reports, Kobra Hassani enrolled in an English-language program at Kyiv University after fleeing Afghanistan, but decided to go to Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine.

​Kobra Hassani worked for Afghan television until the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021.
