Öcalan: Negotiated Democracy is the Key to a Lasting Solution in Turkey

News Center – During a recent visit by a delegation from the Equality and Peoples’ Democracy Party, Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan emphasized that “negotiated democracy” should be the foundation for addressing Turkey’s political and social issues. He underlined the necessity of building a new republic on a legal framework that ensures peace and democracy.

The delegation, which visited Öcalan in İmralı Prison on Friday, October 3, included party co-chair Pervin Buldan, MP Mithat Sancar, and lawyer Faiq Özgür Erol from the Asr Law Office. Following the meeting, which lasted approximately three and a half hours, the party issued a statement highlighting the main points of their discussion.

According to the statement:
“On October 3, we held a meeting with Mr. Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı Prison. As always, he was in high spirits, healthy, and confident. The peace process and the building of a democratic society, which began a year ago, have contributed to sustaining a state of non-violence in the country and helped avert grave dangers. Everyone who has participated in this process has played an honorable and meaningful role.”

The statement noted that Öcalan described “negotiated democracy” as one of the most important models developed by civilization after centuries of devastating conflicts and world wars.
“We must adopt the principles and mechanisms that form the essence of this model in order to resolve the many challenges Turkey faces both domestically and internationally,” Öcalan said, proposing that negotiated democracy should guide all political and social relations.

Öcalan further stressed their continued commitment to his February 27 declaration, emphasizing that the future of the peace process depends on meeting clear political and legal requirements. He underlined the importance of defining these requirements with precision and a comprehensive vision, and then ensuring their implementation.

Concluding, Öcalan asserted that the new century of the Republic must be founded on a solid legal basis for peace and democracy.
