News Center- The Coalition For Women In Journalism (CFWIJ) continues to document rights violations against women journalists. The coalition has released its report titled, “Press Freedom Status For Women Journalists: May 2021.” 70 women journalists were subjected to violence, threat, harassment, and detention in May 2021, according to the report.

Palestinian journalist Reema Saad was killed in her apartment alongside her children and husband when Israeli forces attacked civilian residences in the city of Gaza. At least 18 women journalists were attacked or impeded in the field and at least six women journalists were physically assaulted, and at least seven women journalists faced threats of violence or intimidation in May around the world, according to the report.

Seven women journalists faced legal harassment

The report says that seven women journalists, including Roza Metina, the Kurdish editor of Jin News, Etkin News Agency (ETHA) editor İsminaz Temel and reporter Havva Cuştan faced legal harassment and that four women journalists, including Habertürk TV presenter Ebru Baki, were forced to confront online harassment.

After reporting the rights violations against women journalists around the world in May, the CFWIJ noted “But as always, we continue to find hope.”
