366 people killed by Lassa fever, meningitis in Nigeria

The Lassa fever and meningitis have caused 366 deaths in 24 states of Nigeria since the beginning of 2025, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported on Friday.

News Center- The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported Friday 366 deaths from Lassa fever and meningitis across 24 states in the country since the beginning of 2025.

In its latest update published on its official website, the NCDC confirmed 733 cases of Lassa fever out of 5,118 suspected infections in 18 states and 95 local government areas from January 1 to May 18, recording 141 deaths related to Lassa fever

“The case fatality rate stands at 19.2 per cent, slightly higher than 18.3 percent in 2024, indicating that one in five people infected is dying, in spite of coordinated national efforts,” the NCDC said.

Meningitis outbreak

According to the update, the cases of meningococcal disease have spread to 24 states in the country. The NCDC confirmed 192 cases of meningococcal disease out of 2,911 suspected cases in 24 states and said that the meningitis outbreak killed 225 people from January 1 to May 18.
