Alarming rise in the number of women killed in Syria during May

News Center_ The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights documented the killing of 287 people various Syrian regions during May 2026, including 15 women who died in multiple forms of violence, a new indicator of the continued security deterioration and the worsening risks threatening civilians, especially women.
According to the documentation of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the cases of women killed in Syria were distributed across several patterns of violence: one woman was killed during internal fighting in areas under the control of the Syrian interim government, one woman by random gunfire, another woman died in separate incidents, and one woman died under unknown circumstances.
The Observatory also documented the killing of one woman in sectarian‑motivated liquidations, five women in murder cases within interim government‑controlled areas, and one woman in murder cases in other areas. One woman was killed by a hand grenade explosion. Additionally, the remains of four women were found in mass graves.
These figures reflect the continuation of violence, the multiplicity of armed groups, the spread of weapons, in addition to the remnants of war that continue to claim the lives of civilians, including women and children, in the absence of effective political solutions to stop this ongoing bloodshed.
The Observatory renews its call to the international community to intensify efforts to stop the violence in Syria, work to protect civilians, and ensure the accountability of perpetrators of violations.
