Lebanon…Seven killed and number of displaced rises to over 1.1 million

Israeli raids on Lebanon resulted in seven deaths and dozens injured, as attacks continue towns in south and western Beqaa, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis that has forced over 137,000 displaced into collective shelters.

According to an initial tally, Israeli raids on Lebanon on Tuesday, April 7, resulted in the death of seven people and injuries to dozens, coinciding with Israeli warplanes carrying out a series of intensive raids targeting several towns in the south and western Beqaa.

The Israeli raids also targeted the towns of Maarakeh, where two people were killed. bombings also hit Batoulieh, Al-Qatrani,Zibdin, Ain Qana, and Arabsalim in the south, as well as the Al-Sarira area and the town of Sohmor in the western Beqaa, causing extensive damage to civilian homes and infrastructure.

137,000 in shelters

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Lebanon reported that the number of registered displaced persons in the country has exceeded 1.1 million, amid growing humanitarian needs in various areas. It noted that more than 137,000 displaced persons, of whom children make up about one-third, are residing in approximately 700 collective shelters, most of them schools, while the majority of other displaced persons are living with host communities or in informal settlements, facing great difficulties in accessing the most basic services.

The UN renewed its urgent call for de-escalation and respect for international humanitarian law, stressing the need to protect civilians, including humanitarian and health workers, as well as to ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian aid and to provide the necessary funding for the humanitarian response.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health had announced yesterday that the death toll from the ongoing attacks launched by Israeli forces on the country since the beginning of last March had risen to 1,497 killed and 4,639 injured.
